I'm done with grass. First off, we're facing some serious water shortages all around the country, California and Texas being at the forefront. Secondly, our grass looks like poo poo. And finally, I hate mowing. So from here on out I'm either planting food in my back yard or low-to-no-water Texas natives in my front yard. I'm thinking native no-mow grasses, agave, succulents and other plants more suited for Texas conditions.
I have about 30 x 45 feet of front lawn. And what I really need is a circular drive to get my car closer to my front door. I'm so tired of standing in the street and dodging cars to unload my son's wheel chair and get him in the house safely. So this year, I'll be saving my pennies for installing a circular drive and filling in the rest of my yard with beautiful no-water native species.

amen sister.
That sounds like a good idea. I think it is nice to have a little bit of grass for children to play on and to sit on in a shady spot in summer but I would save that for my back garden and do something similar to what you are going to do in the front.
Thank you! I live in CA and I wish more people had this perspective. We're in a rental now, but when we buy a home I plan to go with rocks, succulents, native plants, etc.
Just as an FYI - we needed a circular drive when my Mom had to move in with us. We didn't have the cash to pave it either so we just started driving on the grass. It's been a year and lo and behold! we have a circular driveway (of sorts :) It's just dirt, but it has compacted nicely and we just mow the center of it. If you wanted to be fancy you could throw some gravel or decomposed granite down on it. It might be a bit too "down home" for your neighborhood (we live in the country) but standing in traffic to deal with a wheelchair sounds like a bummer. I would DIY that circular drive! Good luck!
Leslie, I like the way you think! Now I just have to figure out how to get over the curb and sidewalk. xo
A circular drive... could turn out very chique! Plus, I love those gardens full of agave, succulents etc. So sad that they won't stay alive outside in winter up where we live! I'm looking forward to your before - and - after pics!
