The Deeper Business of Beauty

If we did not know Lupita before, we all know Lupita now. Having just won best supporting actress for her break-out role in 12 Years a Slave, she has catapulted from her graduation from the Yale School of Drama into the stardom stratosphere. She is a spectacular talent. And she is also on a mission. Please watch the video clip below - it is a speech she gave at the Black Women in Hollywood Awards hosted by Essence Magazine.

Now let us rejoice...

I LOVE her speech - but even more I love the collection of amazing and beautiful faces you have put together in the post! Brava!

These are all women. I appreciate the sentiment of diverse beauty, but as long as only women are the object to behold, we will also always be the object (never the subject)

That's an interesting point for sure, Ms Misantropia. I thought about including males in this line up of photos, but decided against it since the video focused on mainly the beauty myth that women, specifically, face. But I agree wholeheartedly with your criticism. I hope my intention is clear in my post that these women are not "objects" of beauty, but rather radiant life forces through which beauty flows inside and out.

Her speech made my cry and I think that if anyone does not listen to it they will miss the intention of this post. She is a stunningly beautiful woman physically, but clearly she is also beautiful inside where it matters. You have assembled and presented a wonderful collection of faces not necessarily conventionally beautiful but actually beyond that.
I am moved to create a blog post honouring yours and linking to it.

These images are so beautiful. It's imperative to remember that beauty comes in many, many forms - not just those that fashion magazines present to us. How many of us closely resemble that image of beauty anyway? I see lovely people everyday and very few of them look anything like models or actors.
