Phillip Seymour Hoffman

I don't usually post current news, but Phillip Seymour Hoffman's death has rattled me to my core. On Sunday, America lost the greatest actor of our generation. So much has already been written about his tragic death, an accidental drug overdose, and more will surely come. I have nothing new to say on that score except that when you repeatedly gaze, as this man did, into the deep dark wilderness of the human spirit - when you eat the fruit of the underworld and return again and again to the surface to tell the tale, it costs you. I have always been in awe of his rare and visceral talent for self-revealing. There will never be another artist like him.

Tonight at 7:45pm, the lights of Broadway will dim in honor of Phil Hoffman.

To his family, peace.
To his theatre colleagues, grace.
To his fans, compassion.
To addicts across this country suffering in silence, respite.
