Peonies

This painting by William Merritt Chase made me think...

...that if I had an English cottage garden, I would fill it with peonies.

A short, historic, peony story. When Jack's Dad, Jack and I were moving into the 'butler's cottage' in Great Barrington, MA, in 1966, the thoughtful folk filled vases with beautiful Peonies. We loved the color, the fragrance and the beauty. We, however, were less thrilled with the very large, very black and very prolific ants that came along inside those beauties! Peonies became outdoor bouquets and all was well.

hopefully, they join in prayers and donations to help charlie heal and support walker, the budding artist!

Ah, yes! Peonies trump roses for me for being the most romantic flower. :)

I once met a man who was renovating a cottage in south-eastern France for his wife and himself to move into. It was very old, since it was found on maps dating to the Napoleonic era.

He said they bought it because his wife fell in love with the huge peony bush in its back garden.

"Sometimes I think," he said with a slight sigh, "I've bought a very expensive peony bush."

I was too polite to point out that surely it must be worth it all the same. ;)

@Barbara YES! Peonies are vastly more romantic than cliched roses.
