When I think of decorating with baskets, I am reminded of that terrible 70's trend of hoarding dusty baskets in the small space between your upper kitchen cabinets and ceiling. These were usually paired with a fake plant or a Grecian style wine jug. Oh, it was awful. Remember?
But it doesn't have to be like that. Baskets are great for all sorts of practical storage uses in the house. I use them tucked at the feet of chairs to hold books and magazines and also for linen closet storage. Here are some images from my dream file that make the case for baskets in the home - I especially love the huge basket used at the end of the bed.

These are wonderful. The one at the end of the bed is a replica of our 'laundry basket' growing up (no comment on what century!!) - It was so heavy when the laundry was in it that I used to bump it down the stairs behind me getting it to the cellar where the washing machine lived. Two sturdy frame braces running parallel along the bottom kept it from falling apart under my mis-use.
Thanks for the visual trip back in time.
Im actually really into painted baskets at the moment. I love the ethnic/hancrafted/traveled look and feel of them. I picked up a couple small ones at a thrift store for pennies the other hand and I think im gonna try my hand at it. Oh and Im pretty much in love with every aspect of that wonderful DIY kitchen. Its one of my favs.
