For a gal who lives in a low key, boho casual home, I'm always a little surprised at my attraction to formal dining spaces. I have a formal dining room in my home. Its the first room you see when entering my home. I've had great fun creating a formal dining room that multi-tasks as a music-writing-reading room as well. Here's my dining room:
Here are some other formal dining rooms, far more inspiring than mine:
How about you? Formal or casual dining space?

I LOVE the third picture...I feel the same way. It's very hard for me to "formal" and I think my dining room is the most my formal taste will fly. Hope you're great!
There is something about a formal dining space that connotes both hospitality and ceremony.
Totally stunning, all -- especially your very real one.
I too must admit that though fewer and fewer families really sit down to formal meals these days, there's something oh-so appealing about the concept.
Cheers and hope your summer is going well, Alcira

I would say formal dining space! Easy to pack since we live with rent :).
Formal. Built-in china hutch and all. Grandma's table/buffet set from c. 1940. A work in progress.
Sarah, I love the color on the walls in your space. What is it?
Deanna - the color in my living room is called Black Pepper from Behr Paints and it reads as a midnight blue - almost black when you're in the room. At first I was nervous, but the color is awesome!
agh... not 'black' pepper - 'cracked' pepper.
i love your dining room, sarah!
(and the carrie leber one.)
LOVE the dining room from Skona Hem...I'd say I'm more of a casual dining space kind of gal. By the way, did I mention I absolutely adore your blog!
Yours is the loveliest from this selection! On a day-to-day basis, it's casual dining for me, but I love having a more formal space for entertaining.
Meera xx
Your dining room is beautiful! I think the ones you chose here are perfect boho dining spaces...not "stuffy" at all!
I love a formal dining room where people have space to enjoy pushing back after a delicious meal and can take time to be inspired by conversation (coffee, scotch, port :-) included. Great post!
Your dining room is lovely, I love its dark, moody quality.
I've always struggled with the concept of formal dining room, and other ways to use it since we don't eat in our everyday. I doubles/triples as homework, giftwrapping, craft station...
Love the second pic.
I was going back and forth on painting my whole apartment slate grey, and then this first photo convinced me to stick with it. It really looks amazing; I owe you one! Gorgeous taste as always. C
