Eclectic Kitchen

Many of you will remember that I sold my home last fall. My family has since transitioned to a much smaller apartment, which is proving to be the perfect place for us. We've got around 1000 square feet - which is plenty for a family of four, a wheelchair and a dog.

I'm so grateful for the smaller space. My housework-load has diminished exponentially and the cost of upkeep for our 2,600 square foot ranch house has disappeared. The other benefit is that we have access to a pool, a private gym, and a lovely dog park, all of which I do not have to maintain. Heaven.

But this morning, I'm missing my kitchen stove a bit. It was a beautiful 5-gas burning stove and I loved cooking on it. My current kitchen, while bigger and certainly upgraded, does not have the charm of my previous kitchen. So today, I'm sharing photos of dreamy eclectic kitchens. These homey spaces remind me that I need to add a few more personal touches to my cookie cutter apartment kitchen.

The Well-Appointed Kitchen

I've been loving these white kitchens with wood accents. Best of all, these spaces aren't huge ostentatious kitchens. They are well appointment, human spaces. Each space is poised to make a meal and seat a family. Perfection.

Houzz Tour | Jason & Amy Moore

I'm so excited to share my latest home tour on Houzz.com. Jason and Amy Moore are my good friends and have been more than generous in helping my family navigate our son's special needs. Their own son, Wyatt, also faces huge medical challenges. The Moore Family has been an enormous support for us and it was my honor to cover their recent remodel for Houzz.com. Click through to the article and find out why.

From the article:

Jason and Amy Moore were well aware that their Dallas house in the tree-lined neighborhood of Lake Highlands was not working for their family, especially when it came to accommodating the special needs of their 8-year-old son, Wyatt. In 2013 the Moores contacted general contractor Christman Fifer of Fifer Renovations for an estimate for a bathroom remodel. “We thought we’d start with the bathroom, since that was our biggest need,” Amy says. “Plus, we knew we couldn’t afford the price tag of a major remodel.”

Fifer surveyed the house, realized the scope of Wyatt’s needs and waived his standard contractor fees as well as got the community involved to fundraise for the project. “It was completely overwhelming,” Amy says. “But sometimes you have to let people be kind to you.”

My Mother's Farm Kitchen Renovation

This week, I wrote an article featuring my mother's newly renovated farm kitchen for Houzz.com. First let me say that my mother wins the prize for the best sport with the most positive outlook. I so admire all of the work she and my step-father have done on their 120 year old farm house in eastern Oregon that I can't help but crow. That's why I keep covering their innovative remodels! (Be sure to check out her BATH remodel if you haven't already.)

But today I want to share their KITCHEN, which is nothing short of amazing when you think that they did it themselves with the help of a few local professionals for the plumbing and electrical. Definitely read the full article, but in the meantime here is my mom and step-dad's beautiful handiwork.

Beams in the Kitchen

My mom is in the process of remodeling her kitchen in Eastern Oregon. She and her husband tore out the inner ceilings to reveal not only a vaulted roofline, but also wood beams! I'm so excited to see what she does with the space, but until then, her home improvement projects has me thinking about beamed ceilings in the kitchen.

Black Kitchens

Sometimes, when I'm cataloguing my favorite images on Pinterest, a pattern appears. I look at what I've compiled and realize that I have penchant for purple floral arrangements or some such thing. Today's ah-ha moment? I became aware that half of my kitchen photos had black walls or cabinetry. Black kitchens. Evidently I love them.
