My House Plants

I have a small legion of little green babies that help oxygenate my home. I rotate them around to make sure they get good light and in the winter months, I use them as centerpieces when flowers are not an option.

The first is a Ficus that I got at Ikea of all places. Thing looses leaves and grows them back with some frequency. He responds well to a bright window but doesn't like direct sun so I keep him in our dining room.

This little guy is a small Fiddle Leaf Fig that I also picked up at Ikea. (Seriously, you should look in their garden section every once in a while if you're on the hunt for sculptural greenery.) This one lives in my bedroom.

I also have a Philodendron, a gift from a friend. This baby grows no matter what I do to it. Snow, sleet, heat, whatever - she just keeps producing. I often take cuttings from her and start new little plants all over the house.

Finally, I have a small Aloe plant, gifted to me by an actress who came over and had me take her head shots. I love this little guy and have used him twice to soothe a burned hand. He keeps me company in my art studio and office. Isn't she cute?

What kinds of house plants to you have?

One of my favorites is a shamrock that a dear friend gave me. Also, I love my yellow blooming begonia.

Hi Sarah! I've been enjoying your blog for the past few months and just wanted to tell you so!

I live in a basement apartment and have found that a peace lily does very well in the limited amount of light I get. Plus, they are one of the best plants for cleaning the air! My anthurium is pretty happy here.

The best news- at the end of the month I'm moving to a new, west-facing apartment with huge windows so I'll be able to keep succulents again! I'm a huge sucker for jade plants and can finally have one again.

Love your plant collection Sarah. Funny story, I hated house plants until about a year actually. I had such a black thumb. I couldn't even manage to keep bamboo alive. But then I got into veggie gardening and decided to give houseplants a try and thus far Ive loved it. I have a Phal orchid, a "little fiddle" that I, too, got from Ikea. Its grown wonderfully since bringing her home. I also have a birdsnest fern, a ficus, a bonsai, Christmas cactus, assorted succulents, jade plant, peperomia, and also a philodendron. I cant wait to add a few more to my collection.

Hi Sarah, I Loved your photos! You have inspired me to finally drop my phone camera, get a good one and LEARN to USE it properly. I'll keep you posted on my progress :) As for my house plants - this comment of mine is a cry of despair :) I have killed a bamboo. As well as mint - 3 different plants, thyme - 2 times, 2 cilantros grown from scraps on different occasions, mini roses - 2 plants, a kalanchoe, a most beautiful jade tree and the list goes on, I am afraid... And I managed to destroy all those plants living in Las Vegas, NV, where there is plenty of sunshine throughout the year... They must have died of over-caring... so now my plants and I are on a break :)
