Stealing from Jamie Meares

Yesterday, I posted about a very cool wall treatment painted by Jamie Meares for her shop, Furbish.  I loved it so much that I immediately stole her idea and painted my entry way.  Eeek!  I love it.  Here is the result:

Jamie, I don't know you, but I love your work and I hope you don't mind that I'm a bold faced design thief.  Imitation, they say, is the biggest compliment you can receive.  I also just found another cool example of the same wall treatment technique at Marcus Design

So here is how I did it:  I rummaged through my almost empty paint cans and mixed them up until I made a suitable gray.  Then I free-form painted the circles, not thinking too much about placement.  I wanted the circles to be like fat zen circles and less oblong.  I made sure, however not to make my circles too small.

Then, I added my entry table - an "As Is" item from Ikea.  I added some books, magazines, a little rattan folding stool and a doll chest I've had since I was nine years old.

Then I hung one of my own paintings above.

And ta da...  A totally transformed entry way!

  2. Thank you Donna! I really love how it turned out and my birdie painting, which has been languishing over my side board in the dining room finally has a real home.

  6. It turned out so great, Sarah! I love that you can get inspired and then just go and *DO* it! I always say that I'm going to these things, but never get up the guts...so I'm even worse than a design thief...I'm just a wanna-be design thief!!! The painting turned out amazing as well and looks so perfect on it's newly fabulous wall (c:

I like to think and stew on things and nothing ever gets done!! I would love to say I am going to do this today but it will be weeks, months..who knows when but I do love it.

    it!
Cannot wait to see some more of your blog!

  33. Looks great but can you humour me? Your painting is hung too high and shouldn't be clear of the accessories below it but in fact come down behind them. Should be about 5" most off of your table.

The results will be even more fantastic I promise.

  34. Ha - Meredith... as soon as I took these photos, I thought the same thing and immediately lowered it about 4 inches.

  37. Hi-your entryway looks great. I just want you to know that I think Jamie Meares copied my work to create her "original wallpaper" You gave credit to Jamie which makes doing your own version just fine in my opinion. I believe that as creative people we should say "inspired by" as you did. Jamie Meares was "inspired by" my work and never gave me credit. I've been a working professional artist for twelve years. Please check out my previous works section on my website to see the similarities. www.amandatalley.com. Your blog is great!

    Happy Friday,
